Pop-Up Book — Art Room Adventures

This pop-up book is a reflection on how we respond to life events as the creative individuals we are. Reflect, respond, rebuild, rebirth.

This book is based on an event that occurred when I was seven years old. I made a sculpture from clay that my father dug up in our yard, like the drawing featured in the first image below. Pleased with my accomplishment I offered it to my aunt to look at more closely, thinking that it was a ball she dropped it expecting it to bounce.

I was shattered just like the object had shattered when it came in contact with the concrete floor. It is also a story about resilience. Later my father gave me more clay to create another sculpture.

The remaining pages of the book encapsulate my approach to art education and how I am impacted by the exchanges I have with my students. Although the two experiences are quite different, I see them similar due to the fact that my responsibility as the teacher is to encourage students to take risks, and keep trying when they may be inclined to give up. I orchestrate as well as collaborate.
