Pop-Up Book — Art Room Adventures

This pop-up book is a reflection on how we respond to life events as the creative individuals we are. Reflect, respond, rebuild, rebirth.

This book is based on an event that occurred when I was seven years old. I made a sculpture from clay that my father dug up in our yard, like the drawing featured in the first image below. Pleased with my accomplishment I offered it to my aunt to look at more closely, thinking that it was a ball she dropped it expecting it to bounce.

I was shattered just like the object had shattered when it came in contact with the concrete floor. It is also a story about resilience. Later my father gave me more clay to create another sculpture.

The remaining pages of the book encapsulate my approach to art education and how I am impacted by the exchanges I have with my students. Although the two experiences are quite different, I see them similar due to the fact that my responsibility as the teacher is to encourage students to take risks, and keep trying when they may be inclined to give up. I orchestrate as well as collaborate.

Pinky's Place

This onsite installation was created as a final project for the graduate course titled "From The Studio to the Classroom."

It was through a consideration of the themes, practices and concerns for contemporary art, we sought to adapt and translate ideas for PreK - 12 settings.  The intent was not to imitate the themes, practices and concerns of contemporary art but rather support the idea of adaptation, translation and the production of new meaning. One such theme that was explored was the fragmented body.

Description of the work:

A room littered with errant graffiti and dramatically lit. In one area of the room a pedestal bowl glows and bubbles over with a foggy substance, at the bowl's base a serpent slithers towards the viewer. Two translucent figures are juxtaposed in close proximity, a sculpted feather is the only point that connects them. The figures glow with pink and blue lights. Electronic music creates a pulse that permeates the room. A breeze from a fan activates the pink mirabu mohawk of the figure who holds a position of dominance.  It seems as if something is going to occur at any moment, elation, anxiety, release. This is Pinky's Place.

Materials: cellophane tape and mixed media
